Corryong Rally Report.
Colac Colac (pronounced Clack-clack) is a particularly beautiful park with hundreds of mature shade trees beside the Corryong creek about 8km south-west of Corryong township.
We had 38 members book in with both vans and cabins, arriving at different times and staying for varying lengths of time. Paul and Melissa, the park managers went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Paul provided a large metal fire pit and replenished the woodpile daily while Melissa provided scones jam and cream with tea and coffee for Sunday morning tea.
We indulged in a couple of 4-wheel drive trips, a couple of road journeys and a bus tour. The park was beside a rail trail which a few of the more energetic campers used to walk to the town and back.
The second and shorter 4WD trip was up the east side of Mt Mittamatite, which at one point needed to have the track cleared of fallen timber, to the lookout and then off the mountain by the gravel road north, which provided splendid views of the valley once we were clear of the forest. The first one we went on as much by accident as design. Coming back from Lake Dartmouth we decided to take the dirt road to Mt Benambra. Expecting to be able to travel at about 60kph we used up all our available spare time by being restricted to a top speed of about 20kph because of the roughness of the road. The views of Lake Dartmouth and surrounds from that elevation made it all worthwhile.
The road trips were firstly for a picnic lunch at Lake Dartmouth which is still about 80% full, compared to the 30% level of Lake Hume and the other following the Murray River back to Bellbridge and Old Tallangatta before we headed back home. Both trips provided us with lovely scenery of mountains, valleys and autumn colour.
The bus trip gave us a guided tour of the Murray 2 Power Station which was both impressive and informative, with a delicious lunch specially put on for us at the Tintaldra pub.
Our regular Saturday night dinner was at the Corryong Hotel and a great night was had by all.
We were extremely fortunate with the weather, the night being cool at 5-10°C and the days gloriously clear at 20-25°C. Of course we kept traditional morning tea and happy hours with lots of chat and laughs.
Thank you to all the attendees for an enjoyable week.
